If you're considering sending a gift hamper to your favorite Canadian, why not
pick a Canadian holiday? While Canada shares many holidays with the UK, Europe
and Australia, it has a few celebrations that are all its own. Your Canadian
friends and relatives will be charmed by the unexpected gesture when your gift
basket arrives just before or after one of these special days.
Canada Day
Celebrated on July 1, Canada Day celebrates the unification of Upper Canada
(now Ontario) and Lower Canada (now Quebec) in 1867 -- the act that created
the modern nation of Canada. It used to be called Dominion Day, and older
Canadians often still refer to it by that name.
Family Day
Family Day is a holiday celebrated across several Canadian provinces as a time
to spend with family members. Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan
observe the holiday on the third Monday in February.
Labour Day
As in the US, Canada's Labour Day takes place on the first Monday in September.
Thanksgiving
Canada's Thanksgiving holiday has a different date and meaning than the US
version. Held on the second Monday in October, Canadian Thanksgiving marks a
general day of thanks for the harvest, though it has precedent in the historic
voyages of Martin
Frobisher and Samuel
de Champlain.
